Rent to Buy Ripe Issue for South Australian Election

Set for Saturday March 21, the South Australian election race is heating up with key electoral pledges now growing in scope and detail.

'Build to Rent' is one component of the Malinauskas Labor focus on housing increases.

Relatively uncommon in Australia, the system is intended to allow renters to, following a set rental period, have the option of purchasing the home for a pre-agreed amount.

The renting rates would be set at 75% of the respective market rate.

Over 2,000 residences are set to be built as part of the scheme with a continuing Labor government to build 1,250 at an estimated project cost of $280 million. A further $133.5 would come from federal funding.
