New Smoke Alarm Laws Come Into Queensland

Smoke alarms in Queensland will have to be interconnected and be photoelectric from Friday 1 January 2027 as the state adheres to the Australian Standard 3786-2014.

Along with a physical inscription of that standard's code on the product, the smoke alarm must also not contain an ionisation sensor and must be hardwired installed to the mains power supply by a licensed electrician.

It also requires a secondary power source - either a  non removable 10 year battery or a user replaceable 9V battery.

Messaging from the Queensland state government has outlined the various code changes since the 1997 mandate for hardwiring. As such, Queenslanders have been encouraged to assess their dwelling's alarm types and placement.
