As buildings become more complex and their reliance on technology increases a good understanding of building services is essential for the management of efficient, safe and sustainable facilities. Building services encompass all aspects of air-conditioning and ventilation, fire protection and essential services systems, power supply and lighting, water supply and waste, security systems and lifts.

The Building Services Special Interest Group (SIG) was established to achieve particular objectives in four areas of focus:
Education and Awareness: Increase the understanding appreciation of building services and the role played in facility management.
Advocacy: Provide a focal point for FMA Australia on regulatory and advocacy issues relating to building services in the facility management industry.
Guidelines and Standards: Provide guidelines and standards relating to building services installations, operation, management, maintenance and sustainability appropriate to the facility management industry.
Research: Participate in, encourage and facilitate relevant research and associated activities relating to building services and facility management.
The Building Services SIG is open to individuals involved within the facility management industry. This SIG is made up of approximately equal numbers of people from the facility management profession and building services professionals such as consultants, designers, contractors, service providers and equipment suppliers.
The SIG generally meets on the last Tuesday of each month in Melbourne. To help improve our members understanding of building services, every second session is convened as a site visit at a facility of interest. It is a great opportunity to be shown around a building and its technical systems in the company of the Facilities Manager and building services professionals.
Individuals who wish to be involved in the Building Services SIG can contact Bryon Price, Building Services SIG Chair, on 03 9248 2700 or email
